Alice Aslem
“Mom don’t worry about me. I have friends at university.”
Painting and Printmaking
Alice Aslem is a Qatar- based artist. Her work captures fragments of observations and memories of the people and moments that touch her life. She uses paints on canvas to explore emotions themed around personal experiences. Her goal is not to pass on a message but to practice self-awareness and consciousness by questioning her beliefs.
In this project, she creates a series of 7 small paintings titled “Mom don’t worry about me. I have friends at university” that combine traditional miniature painting techniques with contemporary view- points.
This piece depicts how she celebrated her New Year’s Eve in 2022. The subject is camouflaged with the background through a unique and experimental use of colors and lines, ranging from delicate to spontaneous, as a way of expressing her perspective on things in life. While working on this piece, Alice discovered that when no one was there for her, she has always had herself. This resulted in one image being duplicated into multiple color palettes depicting her different emotions in a moment. The 8 x 5.5 cm paintings are placed in 80 x 65 cm frames, heightening the surrounding emptiness, and drawing the viewer into an intimate engagement with her work.
Alice’s work has been included in various exhibitions including “Memories in Prints” at Alhosh Gallery and Project spaces in VCUarts Qatar. Alice has also done commercial artworks for Gulf Warehousing Company and Lusail stadium in 2021.
