I’m A multi-disciplinary Qatari artist. My interest revolves around cultural symbols, such as old spiritual buildings, and native animals like falcons and oryx in relation to myself and my identity.

Through this artwork, ‘Peak of Escape’, I wanted to explore my connection to oryx, not only as a cultural symbol of Qatar, but also as my namesake, ‘Al-Maha’, which means oryx eyes in Arabic.

The artwork contains an open wooden window with a running oryx scene in the center.  I also included words by the poet (Mohammed Saleh Alsagher), which speaks about the eyes of AlMaha: 

"أيا بسمة في الدجى أشرقت

                                    أنا قد سباني المحيا الجميل

رعاك الإله أيا خير ثغيرٍ

                                  حَباك المَحَاسن ربً جليل

وعشتُن لي يا عيون المها، ما 

                                             سلا عن هواكُن قلب يميل

فأنتن سحرُ الجَمَال ولولاَ

                                  سناكُنَ ما كان وجه صقيل

         عيون المها قد جلبن الهوى، إذ

                                     علا  كالسيف طرف كحيل 

هو الذرع يحمي الحمى من قذاة

                  فتكلأ عين وخد أسيل 

رعى الله عيناً تواري سهامَا

                         هي الموت إن جار طرف كليل

لك الله يا عين حبي إلام

                    تقرين والقلب صُب قتيل؟

إلام الضنى أيها الطرف؟ رحا 

                               ك َ أضنيت جسمي وقلبي عليل         

حنا نيك يا مالك القلب! فالعيـ

                 ــن ُهيهات تغفو، فأنى تقيل

أيا ليل أشهد بأن الكرى قد

             جفاني، ونجم السماء خليلُ

إلى الله أشكو غزالاً شرودا

              سعيداً بحزني ودمعي يسيلُ
