My name is Ece Yigit, a third culture kid.

In my works I’m interested in portraiture as an expanded study of psychology and philosophy.My inspiration derives from the old masters such as Rembrandt, Caravaggio, who approach their subjects as individual case studies of the human condition.

Getting up-close and personal with people of everyday life has been a passion and curiosity of mine from a young age. This experiment gets me to view the world from a new lens, it expands my knowledge of what’s around me and allows me to view the bigger picture and the hope is that my work would allow for the viewers to experience the same feeling through my work.I felt that a lot of artists work to portray their story through their work but not many tell the story of others that are unknown to the outside world and glorify it.

‘Life between the unknown’ is a mixed media artwork (50 x 68mm each, that explores the relationship between nature vs nurture and the influences that brought third cultured kids from different cultural backgrounds to the same countries with, in the same field of work. It challenges the idea of the unknown space third cultured kids feel belong to and puts it under a scope of whether it stemmed from nature or how they were brought up to be and the places they been to.

My work is formed through 3 series of portraits and are made using oil paint on clear acrylic boards, voices from my interviews with the subjects was used to create an ambience with the works and the words that stood out the most were carved onto the acrylic boards to be projected as shadows behind the paintings using a ring light.
